Hey everyone, I'mmmmmmmmmmmm baaaaackkk! LOL. I've been waiting to get my dslr before blogging again, because mom moved away, and with her went her camera! LOL.Anyways I wanted to share this idea that I got from my step-mom Susi for making hip hays for your little girls! Before my Luau I was stressing about not having enough tapa cloth for making 13 skirts for my hula girls. When Susi pulled a hip hay similar to this one... What a life saver that was, inexpensive, and super cute! Heres how, click the picture to view:
On my first few hip hays I was using this thick crafting rope, but I found that this curling string works best; its light weight, and it blends well. Tapa Cloth strips are cut in random sizes, this gives it a nice authentic look.
this can take quite along time, but if your smart about folding it, you only have to cut it once. I tried making the stripes thinner, but the larger the rectangles, the fuller the look. ;)
when cutting your string, make sure to over estimate the amount that you ACTUALLY need. You'd rather be safe then sorry! Leave an extra two feet on both sides, to tie it together with.
As with the Tapa, cut the raffia the same random way. You can play around with this and add more raffia and Tapa (if you have extra to spear). And you can also use this same technique to maybe make a head piece!
Enjoy! Let me know how it goes, I'd love to see;)
